Overview

A digital vehicle inspection is a record of what one technician looked at, not of what was on the car. Shop Boss gives that technician a fast way to capture photos and videos in the bay, mark them up, write the recommendation and send the whole thing to the customer in a click, and the images stay attached to the repair order afterwards. The limit is the checklist itself: an inspection covers the points your shop put in it, done by whoever had the car, on the day they had it. RapidEye reads the vehicle, the repair order and those same photos, and returns a finding for each condition issue visible in them, including in the corners of frames that were shot for something else.

How it works with Shop Boss

The repair order is the container for everything, and photos enter it in more than one place. The checks follow those places rather than inventing a new workflow beside them.

  • The BOSS Inspect inspection. The photos and videos a technician captures against each inspection point, with markups on top. RapidEye reads the underlying image, not the markup, so a rusted brake line in the background of a tyre photo comes back as its own finding.
  • Upload Pics on the repair order. Shop Boss lets a service writer drag files into the repair order from a desktop or take a live photo from a phone. Those images are usually the ones taken to settle a question, and they are read the same way.
  • Pre-existing damage at intake. The scuffed bumper, the cracked windscreen, the kerbed wheel that was there before the car came in. A dated finding on the intake photos is what stops a repair conversation turning into a damage conversation later.
  • Safety and wear the checklist did not ask about. An inspection built in the Inspection Builder covers the points your shop chose. RapidEye reports what is visible regardless: a weeping shock, a split boot, a chafed harness, a tyre with uneven inner-edge wear.
  • Between visits on the same vehicle. With the inspection photo history read as a baseline, a returning customer's repair order can be compared with the last one, so change over time becomes a finding rather than a memory.
  • Consistency across technicians and bays. Two technicians inspect the same model to different depths. Reading every set to one standard is how a multi-location shop finds out where that gap is.

Each finding names the vehicle, where on it, what kind of issue it is, how serious it is, the photos it came from, and a suggested next step. It lands in the RapidEye dashboard, and in a Slack channel or the service writer's inbox if you want it there. Nothing in Shop Boss moves: your shop decides whether a finding becomes a line on the estimate. If your inspections use a format of your own, or your technicians film walkarounds instead of shooting stills, that is something we set up with you rather than a limit of the product.

How to connect Shop Boss to RapidEye

  1. A Shop Boss account with the vehicles and repair orders you want covered. Vehicles you do not service, such as shop trucks, stay out of scope.
  2. The inspection photos you already take. Your technicians keep working in BOSS Inspect and keep using Upload Pics on the repair order. Nothing about the inspection your shop built in the Inspection Builder changes, and no technician is asked for extra steps.
  3. An employee login for RapidEye. Shop Boss adds users under Settings, then Employees. The modal has the details.

What a Shop Boss inspection is made of

Shop Boss is cloud shop management software for independent and multi-location repair shops, and BOSS Inspect is its digital vehicle inspection, described on its own product pages as letting technicians assess a vehicle quickly while capturing photos and videos directly within the system, then compiling notes, photos and videos into a report the shop sends with a single click. According to Shop Boss's support knowledge base documentation (shopboss.net), the inspection is not one screen but a small system, and knowing which part does what is the difference between a DVI that sells work and one that annoys people.

Shop Boss describes Inspection as diagnosing each customer concern by processing inspection or assessing vehicle needs, and Q-Check as the point where the repair is done and quality assurance measures set by the shop owner take place. Anything the inspection missed is still missing at Q-Check, because Q-Check checks the repair, not the car.

Does anything in Shop Boss read the inspection photos back?

Nothing described in its documentation does, and that is not a shortcoming. The knowledge base covers building the inspection, capturing photos, marking them up, writing notes, sending the report, and an audit log under Settings that retains information for eighteen months. Every one of those is about producing and preserving the record, which is what a shop management system is for. Reading the record back and asking what is in it is a different job, and it is the one RapidEye does, on the photos your technicians are already taking.

Does RapidEye integrate with Shop Boss?

Yes. RapidEye reads the vehicle, the repair order and the photos your technicians attach in BOSS Inspect or through Upload Pics, then returns a finding for each condition issue on the vehicle: damage, wear, safety, or an area the inspection did not cover. The repair order, the inspection and the estimate in Shop Boss are not changed.

Does Shop Boss already hold inspection photos?

Yes. Shop Boss support documentation covers photos and image markups inside BOSS Inspect, and a separate Upload Pics control on the repair order that accepts drag and drop on a desktop or a live photo on a phone. Those images are attached and sent to the customer through Send Update. Nothing in the documentation describes anything reading them back.

Will RapidEye change a repair order or an estimate in Shop Boss?

No. Shop Boss stays the system of record for the repair order, the inspection, the status flag and the estimate. RapidEye reads and reports, and your service writer decides whether a finding becomes a line on the estimate.

Does this replace BOSS Inspect?

No, and it should not. BOSS Inspect is where the technician does the work and where the customer sees it, built around an inspection your shop assembles in the Inspection Builder. RapidEye sits behind it and reads the photos that inspection produced, so the technician keeps one tool and the shop gets a second look.

Can RapidEye compare this visit against the last one on the same vehicle?

Yes. On first connection RapidEye reads the inspection photo history for each vehicle and builds a baseline from it. When a returning customer comes back in, a finding can say what is different since the previous repair order rather than only what is visible today.

Our technicians shoot video, not stills. Does that work?

Yes. Shop Boss describes capturing photos and videos directly within the inspection, and RapidEye reads both. A walkaround video usually gives more to work with than a fixed set of stills, because it covers the areas nobody thought to photograph.
