How the Forma Photos tool works

Overview

The Forma Photos tool is a very good filing system for site media, and filing is not reviewing. Photos, videos and 360 images arrive from the mobile app and from forms, issues, RFIs and submittals, get autotagged, and sit in albums with a map, a location and a date on each one. Everything is findable; almost none of it is looked at, because a project generates more frames in a week than a team can open in a month. RapidEye reads the albums you point it at, learns from your own history what each area looked like, and returns a finding for each frame worth a person's time.

How it works with Autodesk Forma

Forma already organises media by album, location and reference, so the review follows those, not a new structure anyone has to maintain.

  • Album by album. Point RapidEye at the albums that matter, a level, a building, a subcontractor's scope, and every item uploaded there is read as it arrives. Sub-albums inherit the same treatment.
  • Photos attached to a form or an issue. The uploader photographed the thing they were reporting. RapidEye reads the rest of the frame as well, which is where the unrelated hazard or the damaged finish behind the subject shows up.
  • Location on the media. Because an item carries a location, findings arrive tied to the part of the project they belong to, rather than to a filename.
  • 360 captures and video. A walk of a floor is hundreds of views. RapidEye reads them the same way it reads stills and reports the ones that changed since the last walk.
  • Handover and closeout. The dated pair of frames, before and after, is what settles a back charge or a defect argument later. RapidEye keeps that pair together per finding.

Each finding names the location, where in the frame the problem is, the kind of problem, how serious it looks, the earlier and current media, and a suggested next step. Findings land in the RapidEye dashboard, and in a Slack channel or an inbox if you want them there. Whether a finding becomes a Forma issue, and who it goes to, stays your team's decision. How to connect Autodesk Forma to RapidEye

  1. Your Forma project. A project in Forma Build with the Photos tool in use, and the albums or sub-albums that hold the site media you want reviewed.
  2. The media you already capture. Uploads from the Forma mobile app or the web, including the media attached to forms and issues. Nothing changes for the person on site. If part of the project is not being photographed at all, a RapidEye capture link opens on any phone and walks someone through a fixed set of angles.
  3. Add RapidEye as a project member. From the Members tool in Project Admin, with View plus Download permission on the albums you want read. The Connect Autodesk Forma box has the details.

The Photos tool in Forma Build, and what it can tell you

Autodesk Forma is the whole cloud rather than one screen: Forma Site Design and Forma Building Design on the design side, where a geolocated proposal is tested for sun hours, wind and noise before anything is built, and Forma Build on the construction side, where the project is delivered. Autodesk Construction Cloud is now part of Forma, and the product names were updated with it, which is why a team may still call the same screen Autodesk Build. Site photography lives on the construction side, in the tool called Photos.

According to Autodesk's Forma help documentation (autodesk.com), projects created in Forma Build from March 2026 use an updated Photos experience built around albums: media is organised into albums and sub-albums, permissions set on an album are inherited by the sub-albums beneath it, autotags can be switched on so tags are added to newly uploaded media, and each item carries a title, a location, a description and its tags. The Gallery and Map tabs are two views of the same set, and the Map tab filters the items that carry GPS data. Autodesk's product page describes the same gallery holding photos, videos and 360 images, media attached to forms, issues, RFIs and submittals appearing there, one click from a photo to whatever references it, and PDF photo reports for sharing.

What you can search for, and what you cannot

Autodesk documents the filters available across the tabs. Every one of them is a way of narrowing which media you look at.

The last one is not a filter Autodesk offers, and it is not a gap in the tool. No filing system knows what is in a frame in that sense.

That is the seam the integration fills. Autotags and references answer where a photo is and what it is attached to; a person still has to open it to know whether the work in it is right. RapidEye reads the media in the albums you choose, learns each area from your own history, and returns the ones that show something, so the weekly review starts with a short list instead of a gallery.

What access does RapidEye need?

The least that works. Autodesk documents five permission levels on a photo album, and project administrators hold Manage by default.

Does RapidEye integrate with Autodesk Forma?

Yes. RapidEye reads the photos, videos and 360 images your team uploads to the Photos tool in Forma Build, together with the album, the location and the date they were taken, and returns a finding for each one that shows damage, unfinished work, a missing item or a hazard. Your albums, issues, forms and models in Forma are not changed.

Where do site photos live in Autodesk Forma?

In the Photos tool inside Forma Build. Autodesk describes it as a central gallery for photos, videos and 360 images with a map view, and photos attached to a form, an issue, an RFI or a submittal appear there too. In the updated experience, projects organise media into albums and sub-albums with their own permissions, and every item carries a title, location, description, tags and autotags. Forma Site Design, the design side of Forma, holds proposals and analyses rather than site photography.

Do autotags already tell you which photos show a problem?

Autotags say what is in the frame, not whether it is right. Autodesk's documentation describes machine learning autotags added to newly uploaded photos, plus manual tags, so you can filter to ladders or concrete or a location. That is a way of finding photos. RapidEye is a judgment on top of it: it compares this photo of an area to the earlier photos of the same area, learned from your own history, and reports what changed and why it matters.

What access does RapidEye need in Forma?

Read access to the albums you want reviewed. Autodesk documents five photo album permission levels: View only, View plus Download, Create, Edit and Manage, with project administrators holding Manage by default. RapidEye is added as a project member from the Members tool and given View plus Download on those albums, which is enough to read the media and nothing more.

Will RapidEye create issues or change anything in Forma?

No. Forma stays the record for the project: albums, references, issues, forms, RFIs and models are untouched. RapidEye reads media and reports findings, and your project team decides what becomes an issue and who it goes to.

We already run photo reports every week. What does this add?

A photo report shows the photos. It does not say which of them show a problem, and on a busy project a week of capture is thousands of frames that nobody has time to open. RapidEye reads all of them and returns the short list worth a look, with the earlier photo of the same area beside the current one.
